L'olio è un ottimo legante che indurisce nel tempo per contatto con l'ossigeno presente nell'aria formando una pellicola insolubile e resistente (polimerizzazione). La possibilità di creare finissime velature trasparenti e di lavorare il colore che si mantiene a lungo fresco, permette di ottenere effetti di luce e di profondità difficilmente raggiungibili con altre tecniche pittoriche. Consente inoltre di ampliare la gamma cromatica, ammorbidire le sfumature e potenziare il modellato. Una volta asciutti, i colori impastati con l'olio garantiscono una lunga durata, soprattutto rispetto alla tempera, mantenendo pressoché inalterati i valori cromatici.
The oil is an excellent binder that hardens over time by contact with the oxygen present in the air forming an insoluble and resistant film (polymerization). The possibility of creating very fine transparent veils and working the color that remains cool for a long time, allows to obtain light and depth effects that are difficult to reach with other pictorial techniques. It also allows you to expand the color gamut, soften gradients and enhance the model. Once dry, the colors kneaded with oil guarantee a long life, especially compared to tempera, keeping the color values almost unchanged.
